Electric cars have grown increasingly popular over the years, with the number of homes with EV chargers rising subsequently. But can you install one yourself? Technically speaking, yes, it can be done. However, for the average homeowner, absolutely not, despite the appeal, particularly financially.
Naturally, EV charger installation is classed as high-risk electrical work. Therefore, it must comply with UK Building Regulations (Part P) and BS 7671 wiring regulations. As this is not something most of us can ensure, work must be carried out by a qualified and registered electrician, with the installation tested and certified. Essentially, the law tells us that whilst in theory it’s not illegal, you must be qualified to legally certify the work, which we’re afraid rules out DIY for the vast majority.
Like with any high-risk electrical work, there’s always good reasoning behind utilising the expertise of a licensed electrician, such as:
If you haven’t already been convinced that a DIY EV charger job is not a good move, then you need to read on, as the implications don’t end there.
Perhaps you chose to self-install because it seemed cheaper? Well, the reality is that in the long run it will almost always end up more expensive. If you don’t install the charger properly, you will have no choice but to call in the professionals to fix the job, who will not only be completing a reinstallation, but likely repairs too - fixing any damage that has been caused.
Not to mention, you stand no chance at qualifying for the £350 EV chargepoint grant, as the government require an OZEV-approved professional installer to complete the work.
Let’s say you do manage to complete a successful installation; most manufacturers still require a professional job, and therefore, this will mean that your warranty is void. Leaving you with no protection whatsoever should your EV charger suffer any faults.
A registered, licensed electrician will be able to install your EV charger legally and give you peace of mind that it’s been done correctly and won’t leave you at risk.
Given their expertise, they will assess your home’s electrical capacity and install a dedicated circuit. This is important as it ensures proper earthing, weatherproofing, load testing, and of course, providing the vital certification to avoid trouble later down the line.
