When it comes to seasonal hazards, Christmas lights are certainly up there. While a recent survey from Good Housekeeping found that 42% of Brits are more concerned with how well lit their home is than the safety of their lights, Christmas light safety isn’t exactly a priority!

Without the right checks and maintenance however, Christmas lights can pose several risks, including blackouts, electric shock, and even fires. Don’t let Christmas go up in smoke, use the following top tips to minimise the risks that go hand-in-hand with Christmas lights this festive season.

Buy from a reputable retailer

Electrical safety standards matter, and with Christmas lights, it is important to acknowledge that not all are created equal. In fact, new research from Which? found that almost half of the Christmas tree lights tested had the potential to cause a fire or electrical injury. Of the 13 lights examined, six failed to meet the required electrical safety standards.

If you’re in the market for new Christmas lights, always purchase from a reputable retailer to keep standards and safety high.

Check your lights before use

If you’re digging out the Christmas lights from last year, be sure to check that they are working correctly. Look for lights that are damaged or broken, as well as loose wiring. If some of the bulbs have failed, switch only with the replacement bulbs provided.

You should not attempt to repair faulty lights. Instead, lights that are damaged should be replaced with immediate effect.

Remember, placement is everything!

Never use Christmas lights that are designed for indoors externally. You should also position your Christmas lights well away from flammable materials. Lights and extension leads should be placed safely too, with no trailing wires or cords. No matter how unsightly, don’t be tempted to run cords or cables under the carpet either.

Improve safety and save energy

Make sure you turn off your Christmas lights when you’re not home or when you go to bed. In addition to enhancing safety, it’ll save tons of energy! For extra peace of mind, check that your smoke alarms are in good working order too.

Consider an outdoor plug

Calling on an electrician to fit a dedicated outdoor plug is a great option for Christmas light lovers looking to go big with their festive displays. Specialised outside plugs are weather and waterproof, and actively reduce fire risk and prevent electrical damage.
