As one of the highest paid trades in the UK, becoming an electrician is a popular career path for many. The prospect of a steady income, higher than average salary, and ongoing demand across many industries (including the construction sector) also add to the appeal. But how do you go about starting a career as an electrician?

In this blog post, we share the most common routes to qualifying as an electrician in the UK.

Study at college

One of the best ways to gain the knowledge, skills and qualifications you need to carve out a successful career as an electrician in the UK is studying on an appropriate course as part of your further education.

There are several college courses that may be suitable, including the Level 2 Diploma in Access to Building Services Engineering (Electrical), Level 2 and Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation, and T Level in Building Services Engineering for Construction.

You’ll generally need two or more GCSEs at grades 9 to 3 (A* to D), or equivalent, to study on the level 2 syllabus. Those with 4 to 5 GCSEs at grades 9 to 4 (A* to C), or equivalent, can choose to start their education at level 3 or T level.

Become an apprentice

If you’d like to earn money while you study, why not apply for an advanced apprenticeship? There are many advantages to combining practical, on the job training with education. For example, you’ll be paid a wage, work with experienced staff, build skills that are specific to the job role you wish to qualify for, and spend part of your week studying at college.

Gain experience on the job

You can still pursue the traditional route of training while you work without the element of study. You’ll generally need at least five years of experience working as an installation or domestic electrician to qualify via an Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA).

This is by no means a shortcut to qualification. You’ll have to demonstrate your skills, experience and competence to the level 3 benchmark to get recognised.
