Your home is your castle - we get that. In fact, we’re all the same. It’s why, whenever anyone leaves their home, there’s that little niggle at the back of the mind that says “I hope we don’t get burgled”.

Thankfully, the chances of you not being burgled are higher, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be vigilant when it comes to home security.

The good news? There are so many things you can do these days to make a home more secure that are affordable, accessible to most people and, crucially, pretty straightforward.

Here are our five favourite home security tips

1. Install security cameras

There was once a time when home security cameras were expensive and only available for people with deep pockets.

Not any more.

Now, cameras of this kind can be purchased relatively cheaply and put to some very interesting uses. For instance, you can buy doorbells with integrated cameras and both exterior and interior cameras that can be controlled and accessed remotely from your smartphone.

2. Add exterior lighting

It’s one of the oldest home security tricks in the book, but one of the most effective, too.

Homes that are shrouded in darkness are usually more tempting targets for burglars. Therefore, if you add plenty of light around your home, you’ll probably scare most of them off.

These can be simple lights that illuminate your garden and the walls of your house, or more serious security lights that blast out plenty of light when they detect movement.

3. Make sure you have an alarm

Modern home alarm systems come in all shapes and sizes, and therefore suit pretty much any budget.

Yours might be a simple intruder alarm that sounds when it detects movement or forced entry, but if your budget can stretch, you can invest in far more comprehensive security systems that protect every square inch of your home.

4. Don’t neglect the garage

The garage is a classic entry point for burglars. This is usually due to the fact they often contain expensive goods, but also because they sometimes provide an alternative route into the home itself.

This is why you need to pay particular attention to garage security. A solid, lockable garage door, security camera and sufficient lighting will do it, but you could go further with motion sensors and smoke emitters (which flood the garage with smoke if a break-in is detected), if you have the budget.

5. Implement some home automation

From automated lighting to power outlets, you can now control virtually every aspect of your home from your smartphone.

Home automation is becoming more affordable than ever, and even easier to install if you’re that way inclined.

What’s more, you can start small by simply adding a few smart lights and build as you go, thus spreading out the cost of this form of home security that is fast becoming a favourite among home owners.

Wrapping up

We hope our tips above have given you plenty of ideas for securing your home. You won’t need all of them, either - in fact, for some people, just one might be enough to ensure the property is safe from harm.

Enjoy keeping your home secure - it’s the best peace of mind you can gain as a home owner. Just remember that it usually makes sense to employ the services of a qualified electrician to undertake most of the work we’ve suggested.
