With the recent energy price cap rise, households throughout the UK are now facing steeper costs for their energy. The 54% increase means that the average household will pay a whopping £1,971 a year for their gas and electricity.

With a further increase expected in October 2022 predicted to push this annual bill to £2,600, making changes now could mean significant savings. We’re here to share our top tips for saving on your electric bills so you can breathe a little easier in the months to come.

Stop leaving devices on standby

Leaving appliances and other devices on standby can waste an awful lot of electricity. By switching items like your television, microwave, toaster and kettle off at the wall, you can cut your electric bill by up to £30 per year.

Invest in energy efficient appliances

If one or more of your household appliances needs to be replaced, consider your options carefully. Not all appliances were created equal, some are more energy efficient than others.

Invest in an energy efficient model, preferably with an A+++ rating. An A+++ rated washing machine will save £65 more energy than an A+ rated alternative. Need to replace to your fridge freezer? Choosing an A+++ model will save approximately £320 more than an A+ rated fridge freezer.

Be vigilant with your lighting

Your home’s lighting uses a significant amount of electricity, so be sure to switch lights off when they’re not required. Get into the habit of turning your lights off when you leave the room and cut your electric bill by up to £20 per year.

You should also swap your light bulbs with LED alternatives to enjoy longer lifespans and reduce the amount of electricity you use.

Change your washing habits

Changing how you wash and dry your clothes will help you lower how much electricity and water you use.

In addition to washing your clothes at 30°C and only using the machine on full loads, dry clothes on racks indoors or make use of the improving weather by hanging them on the line outdoors. By avoiding tumble dryer use, you could save as much as £60 annually.

Don’t overfill the kettle

Whilst filling your washing machine and dishwasher to capacity will save you money on your electric bills, the same can’t be said when using the kettle. By avoiding overfilling your kettle and only boiling the water you need, you can save £11 per year on your electric bill.
