The safety of your office or workplace should of course be a top priority. As an employer, you have a moral obligation and legal duty to provide a safe working environment as well as ensure the employees within are healthy and happy.

If you have electrical appliances and equipment in your workplace, they should also be deemed safe for use. That’s where PAT testing comes in…

An introduction to PAT testing

PAT or Portable Appliance Testing is the examination of electrical appliances and equipment. PAT testing is a routine check that is, or at least should be, completed across every workplace or rented property to ensure electrical equipment is safe and functioning correctly.

PAT testing involves a visual inspection and test to identify defects and damage that may compromise the appliance or device’s electrical safety.

Is PAT testing a legal requirement?

Whilst highly recommended, the completion of regular PAT testing is not a legal requirement. In accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, all portable electrical equipment should be maintained to a condition that poses no risk of injury.

The law however does not state how electrical equipment and appliances should be maintained, how often or by whom.

Why should I invest in PAT testing?

PAT testing remains an important part of many commercial and industrial settings’ maintenance regimes. With periodic PAT testing, you can uphold the highest standards of safety, protect employees and visitors from injury, and dramatically lower the risk of electrical fires.

PAT testing also provides vital assurances regarding the quality of your electrical equipment to ensure extra peace of mind for employers.

How often should I PAT test my equipment?

PAT testing may not be required by law but it is an important step in protecting your workers from injury. Most offices and workplaces complete PAT testing on electrical equipment and appliances at least once a year to ensure devices are free from damage or defects and safe to use.

The frequency of PAT testing however depends on the type of electrical equipment you use and the surrounding environment.

Need assistance with PAT testing?

PAT testing should always be completed by a competent and qualified electrician to ensure accurate results and safe device use. With the right knowledge and experience, inspection and testing can be used to keep everyone who uses your commercial or industrial property safe.
