Solar panels are no new thing. The technology used to make the collection of solar energy possible was actually invented in the 1800s. It wasn’t until much later, in the 1950s, that the modern silicon solar cells used in today’s panels were pioneered however.

Solar panels remain one of the top forms of green technology to date, but will they really help you save money on your electricity bill?

The science behind the solar panel

As the name suggests, solar panels capture and convert energy from the sun. They do this by taking energy in through individual photovoltaic (PV) cells, which produce an electrical charge as a result. While the electricity is created as direct current or DC, its transmission through an inverter converts it to alternating current (known as AC) so it can be used in our homes.

The UK may not be known for its sunny climate, yet solar panels can be used to generate electricity all year round. The stronger the sunshine however, the more electricity the panels will capture and convert. The average solar panel system uses 6 to 12 panels to power a property.

The benefits of solar panels

While the initial outlay of solar panel installation can be pricey, costing around £7,000 on average, you could save up to £420 per year across the lifetime of the panels according to the latest findings. Electricity bill savings depend on several factors, including the size of your solar panel system and your property’s electricity usage.

You could also earn money from the energy you produce with tariffs available via multiple energy suppliers to buy the electricity you don’t use at home. By installing solar panels at your property, you’ll be investing in a low carbon, renewable energy source that’ll serve you and the planet well for years to come.

Solar panel installations are on the rise

Despite the history of solar cells, solar panel systems continue to provide the cutting-edge solutions modern people need to embrace a low carbon, renewable form of green technology at home. Over 180,000 solar panel systems were fitted in the UK last year, which is a third more than the previous year, and installations are expected to continue to rise.
